In 2013, we launched a community programming series called Lower 9 Growing Strong at the Guerrilla Garden (one of our community gardens). In the Fall and Spring seasons, Lower 9 Growing Strong provides afternoon programming for children, adults and seniors that includes our Food As Medicine workshop series, our Super Saturday community parties, gardening workshops, and Kids Club.
BGN’s Kids Club is a weekly workshop series that engages neighborhood children between the ages of 5 and 13 years in gardening, art, history and cooking activities. The purpose of Kids Club is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children to gain knowledge and appreciation of how food grows, how to prepare and eat fresh vegetables, how to be responsible environmental stewards and how they can make a meaningful contribution to their community. Kids Club is rooted in African and African-American history and culture, giving Black children more exposure to positive examples of who we are as a people.
